Commercial commitment signed in readiness to bid for Brazil’s deep-water fields

Ocyan and Magma Global, manufacturer of the world’s most advanced thermo-composite pipes (TCP), announced on May 2 the conclusion of the conceptual design of the Composite Multi-Bore Hybrid Riser (CMHR) for ultra-deepwaters. The companies signed a long-term commercial agreement and will offer the CMHR solution together for ultra-deepwater fields in Brazil. The concept was validated by an engineering firm and is already being presented to and evaluated by potential clients.

CHMR offers several benefits for companies operating oilfields. Currently, there is constant demand to reduce weight and load in operating FPSO (Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading) vessels. With a decoupled solution, the CMHR applies less than 20% of the load of other solutions, resulting in a load difference of up to 9,000 tons-force per FPSO.

The use of TCP offers high corrosion resistance (for example CO2 and H2S), weight reduction and the possibility of withstanding high temperature and pressure. Its mechanical flexibility enables the design of a new concept for lower-end terminations (patent pending), which allows the riser to be connected directly to the flowline – both rigid and flexible – without any changes to the CMHR project.

The pipe used in CMHR will be m-pipe®, produced by Magma, which is coiled in rolls and requires no welding, making the manufacturing system compact, simple and easy to standardize, thus enabling high local content. Once all the CMHR components reach the site, its assembly takes only 20 days. Offshore (at high sea) installation takes another 20 days, without the need for special vessels and with low exposure to bad weather.

We worked in partnership with Magma and were able to design a robust riser system. It’s a perfect marriage in the technical aspect, since the CMHR provides support so that the riser works almost like a spool, in a quasi-static application. Moreover, the concept makes use of the mechanical properties of the m-pipe®. The result has exceeded our expectations and the project’s complexity was drastically reduced,” said Marcelo Nunes, Subsea Officer at Ocyan.

m-pipe®, manufactured by Magma Global, is a high-quality pipe offering high resistance and low carbon weight and PEEK polymer, with a complete monolithic structure from its internal to its external diameter. m-pipe® offers superior performance in deepwater and adverse sea conditions, significantly reducing risks and costs involved in the development and operation of offshore fields.
