  • Ocyan seeks certification for CompRiser

Ocyan is advancing in its independent verification of CompRiser®, a hybrid riser tower system launched last year in partnership with Magma Global and BrasFELS. The companies retained the certification body DNV to conduct this work, which began in February.

DNV GL verification is an independent endorsement attesting to the robustness of the CompRiser® solution. In parallel, Magma also is in the process of qualifying the m-pipe® composite pipe used by Petrobras.

“DNV GL has a standard for composite pipe, but the independent verification we are seeking is specific for the CompRiser®,” explained Leandro Brusque, supply chain manager at Ocyan.

The verification process, which is divided into two phases, should be finalized in the first half of 2019. The first phase involves analyzing the entire design, including the project’s engineering, documentation, processes and material. The second phase focuses on Failure Mode and Effect Cause Analysis (FMECA – a way of documenting in an organized and systemic manner the failure modes and their effects and criticality), prioritizing the functionality and safety of the system.

“Magma continues to develop its qualification program for the Brazil pre-salt fields and we see the DNV GL endorsement of the CompRiser® system as a major milestone in the future use of our technology in Brazil and other deepwater fields,” explained Tony Duncan, Executive VP at Magma.

“We are glad to be part of this exciting project. DNV GL has strong expertise within TCP and subsea systems for deepwater applications, and combining such expertise with our technology qualification and independent verification approach will contribute positively to the reliability of this promising technological development that is the CompRiser®,” said Barbara Matos, Head of Section at DNV GL Rio.

    CompRiser

CompRiser® is a hybrid riser tower system created in partnership with Magma Global for use in the deepwater and ultradeep water oil exploration industry. The Thermoplastic Composite Pipe (TCP) used in the CompRiser® will be m-pipe®, manufactured by Magma. TCP provides high corrosion resistance (e.g., CO2 and H2S) of great value to subsea systems in pre-salt areas, significant weight reduction and the possibility of withstanding high temperatures and pressures. Its mechanical flexibility allows the design of a new concept for the lower termination (patent pending) that allows the riser to be connected directly to the flowline – both rigid and flexible.

Its compact and modular manufacturing method allows for high local content. Additionally, m-pipe® is delivered in reels and does not require welding, simplifying the bundle assembly, which can be completed in less than 30 days. The offshore installation takes another 20 days, without the need for special vessels and with minimal exposure to bad weather conditions.

As a decoupled solution, the product uses less than 20% of the load applied by other solutions in the production units. The result of this difference can exceed 9,000 tons per FPSO, based on the number of risers in the project risers. Reducing weight and load in FPSO operations is a constant demand of operators.

Late last year, BrasFELS, the Brazilian shipyard of Keppel Offshore & Marine, joined the partnership between Ocyan and Magma, due to its installed production capacity and reputation in the Brazilian market, which further reduce the project’s risk assessment.
