  • OEC wins contract to build Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in belém, Pará, Brazil

    Today (4/5/2018), Odebrecht Engineering & Construction won the Pará government public tender to construct the Belém Metropolitan Region Central Bus System in Pará. At 10.8 kilometers in length, the system will provide a public transport service, which will serve approximately 1 million people, passing through municipalities in the vicinity of the BR-316 highway: Belém, Benevides, Santa Bárbara do Pará, Santa Izabel do Pará, Ananindeua and Marituba. Operation of the BR-316 Corridor will be integrated with the Belém Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which the City Hall is constructing within the limits of the Pará capital.

    Estimated at BRL 384.6 million, a cost 26.5% lower than that defined in the public notice, the project will receive resources from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), through its Official Development Assistance (ODA) program. OEC competed with another seven entrepreneurial groups, including companies from Spain, Portugal and China, in a two-stage public tender process: the first included a technical proposal, qualifications and capacity. The second phase involved a commercial proposal, in which the company presented the lowest price among the other bidders.

    “The public tender process was conducted according to the premises of compliance which we are practicing. We highlight the consistency of the project presented in the public notice: from the definition of the source of resources for the work and preparation of the executive project by the financing bank,” confirms José Eduardo de Sousa Quintella, OEC Brazil Regional Director.

    The physical infrastructure of the integrated bus transport system will include:
    – Rigid pavement corridors exclusively for buses;
    – Urban requalification of the BR-316 highway, with three lanes in each direction;
    – Installment of bicycle lanes and 11 pedestrian footbridges;
    – Construction of two integration terminals;
    – Thirteen passenger stations;
    – Two underpasses with two tunnels in each, and
    – A viaduct complex.

    It also includes the installation of a new rainwater drainage system throughout the section and construction of a bus service and terminal Operational Control Center (OCC). The expectation is that the project will commence in 2018 and will take approximately 20 months. The construction will generate around 1,000 jobs with mostly local labor.
