Fare can be purchased simply by using a debit or credit card at the turnstile

SuperVia, an Odebrecht TransPort company, is expanding the number of stations that accept fare payments by simply tapping a debit or credit card on the reader at the turnstile. To access the Rio de Janeiro train system, passengers simply can use their cards directly at the turnstiles, with no need to pre-pay their fare at the ticket booth.

The contactless payment technology is operating on 19 turnstiles at the six largest stations: Central do Brasil, São Cristóvão, Maracanã, Olímpica, Engenho de Dentro, Madureira and Deodoro. By the end of the year, the technology will be operating at ten stations. The system accepts MasterCard contactless credit, debit and prepaid cards. Passengers also can use digital wallets to pay for fares.

“Automated payment speeds up boarding and is safer and more efficient. We’re always seeking new solutions to facilitate the experience for passengers,” explained Herbert Quirino, Chief Financial Officer at SuperVia.

With the reduction in operating costs, one of the possible benefits for users is the five-year tariff review process, with the annual savings on ticket-booth costs and cash-in-transit services potentially reaching R$7 million.
