To call the attention and promote empathy among all company collaborators with the reality of people with disabilities, Ocyan promoted an innovative event using gamification. This week, company collaborators in Macaé (RJ) and Rio de Janeiro, were able to live experiences and undergo situations in an Escape Room format, where participants are challenged to complete team challenges.

During two days, more than 120 collaborators participated in an escape game with the objective of deciphering codes, for example, through passwords in sign language, that would be used to open padlocks; in auditory memory games; the use of sensory box with limited vision and tactile stimulus.

“We seek to engage them in the resolution of the day-to-day problems experienced by people with disabilities, aiming, through the experience, to improve learning and stimulate actions and behaviors that show the need for teamwork and solidarity among all members, regardless of their condition. The experience was a success,” points out Nir Lander, Director of Planning and People.

In Macaé, a truck with a glass body was prepared to receive the collaborators who signed up for the experience. In each round, groups of five to seven collaborators participated in the game, being challenged to emerge in the world of people with disabilities, and stimulated to sharpen their senses to unveil the codes. In Rio de Janeiro, a room adapted with the same objective received seven to ten people in each round.

For Érica Lisboa, member of the Quality area of the drilling unit in Macaé, the experience was an enormous learning opportunity: “It was important for us to identify how teamwork, time management, planning and communication are important”. For Raquel Borges, also from the Quality area, the awareness promoted by the company was surprising: “The experience of sensory difficulties that were presented to us, made us reflect on empathy and inclusion of People with Disabilities”, she points out.

“We extracted numerous reflections. Listening to them after the game, during the moment in which they share their feelings, was essential to create the link between the empathy and respect that we must carry with us. The game helped us to understand that we are all different, we have limitations and qualities that add up to achieve a common goal, being a person with disability is not being incapable and that having a diverse group brings great results for the team,” says Isabel Carneiro, a nurse working at Ocyan and volunteer for the Group of People with Disabilities of the company’s Diversity and Inclusion Program.

The inclusion of people with disabilities in all areas of the company is one of Ocyan’s goals. The company has recently carried out a mapping of the functions of offshore members (on rigs and FPSO) that can be performed by people with disabilities, within their limitations and without risks to life and operations. The facilities are already in the construction and adaptation phase so that everyone feels included, in accordance with ABNT standards. Today, as a premise, all employment opportunities at Ocyan allow people with disabilities to apply.

    Diversity Program

Ocyan was one of the first companies in the oil (oil and gas) production chain in Brazil to include diversity in its agenda. Between 2016 and 2017, this theme became one of the company’s major challenges. Since 2017, the company’s Compliance area and Ethics Line Channel have operated as spaces to ensure respect for inclusion, mitigating cases of prejudice and discrimination in an incisive manner, directly contributing to the promotion of an environment of psychological security, respect and empathy.

Ocyan executives dived deep into this challenge, with an additional effort due to the culture of the oil and gas industry, where the company is inserted, which is predominantly male. The company sought support from those who were more familiar with the good examples, such as the Mais Diversidade consultancy. This year, with the creation of the Program and the installation of the Committee and its respective affinity groups, the themes of diversity and inclusion have already been incorporated into the daily routine of the corporation: “We advanced with the awareness and the need for coexistence among all groups and we have already made the first deliveries, such as the flexibility of working hours for collaborators when they return from maternity leave and this recent action focused on people with disabilities. These are the first two groups that were prioritized in the project,” explains Camilla Braz, Ocyan’s Diversity & Inclusion Program Leader.
